Something remarkable is happening on the streets of Lusaka. What started as everyday wear — chitenge wraps, hand-dyed fabrics, bold prints — is now being photographed by international fashion accounts and featured in global style round-ups.
The hashtag #LusakaStreetStyle has over 4 million views on TikTok, with creators from Lagos to London taking note.
"We were never trying to follow trends," says Lusaka-based fashion photographer Mwila Kazembe. "We were just dressing the way we dress. The world finally caught up."
The Chitenge Revolution
At the center of this movement is the chitenge — the colourful fabric that has been part of Zambian culture for generations. Designers are reimagining it for modern silhouettes: blazers, jumpsuits, sneakers, and even swimwear.
Several Zambian designers have now been approached by ASOS Africa and Farfetch for exclusive collaborations.
